Switchblade (Aus) 2004 bay gelding (Fusaichi Pegasus x Dane Ripper). MRA U622
Being by a Kentucky Derby winner out of a W.S.Cox Plate and Australian Cup winner, Switchblade was impeccably bred.
Switchblade arrived in Singapore on the 17th September, 2008 with a record of 10 starts in Australia for a win at Warwick Farm, 2 seconds and 2 thirds. One of the second placings being in the Listed T.L. Bailleau Stakes at Warwick Farm.
In Switchblade's first preparation in Singapore the horse performed magnificently. Switchblade was able to break through for a win at Kranji Stakes C level over 1900 metres on the Polytrack and followed up with a win at Kranji Stakes B level over 1700 metres on the Polytrack. Din Azis was in the saddle for both wins.
Switchblade's next preparation in Singapore was also a success. Partnered by Joao Moreira and anchored by a 58kg steadier, Switchblade became the holder of the track record at Kranji over 1700 metres on the Polytrack when he stopped the clock in 1:46.6. The win enabled Switchblade to gain a start in the $1,000,000 Emirates Singapore Derby where he finished 10th in the 16 horse field behind Jolie's Shinju.
After a strong first up run over an unsuitable 1200m where Switchblade ran 2nd to the world class Rocket Man the horse had a stint in Malaysia under trainer Richard Lines. The Malaysian stint did not go so well for the horse and he returned to Singapore to race on his favored Polytrack.
Back in Singapore under the care of Steven Burridge, Switchblade ran some nice lead up races before a brilliant win in the 2011 Marsiling Classic Stakes over 1800 metres on the Polytrack where he defeated a couple of multiple group winners in Thundering Jet (SAF) and El Dorado (JPN). Joao Moreira was back on board for the win.
Switchblade was for three years among the top horses in Singapore when it came to racing over distance on the Polytrack. His overall record of only 4 wins from 32 starts looks moderate but the reality was that his career statistics suffered due to many cancelled races and not enough suitable races. Unfortunately many of the horses races were over unsuitable distances that served to race him into fitness for the Polytrack staying races.
Switchblade was only able to start in 6 races on the Kranji Polytrack at 1700m and above. In those 6 races he built a record of 4 wins a second and a third.
Overall in Singapore & Malaysia, Switchblade had 32 starts for 4 wins, 6 seconds, 3 thirds and 2 fourths and earned S$373,826 in prize money.
